For a new series on CNN fans will get a up close look at the career of Eddie Murphy when he was over at Saturday Night Live. The series entitled The Eighties will examine how Murphy helped save the show. In the new series a collection of show’s will be discussed when it premieres on Thursdays at 9 p.m. starting March 31 on CNN.

The late-night sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” had been a ratings success since the mid-1970s, but by the early ’80s it had hit a slump. Then an innovative 19-year-old comedian named Eddie Murphy, center, joined the cast and helped turn the ratings around. Murphy fearlessly and hilariously took on socially cutting-edge subjects such as white privilege. As SNL veteran Chris Rock said during the 40th-anniversary show in 2015: “Eddie saved SNL.”
