Every morning, millions of people listen to the voice of our next woman featured in our series ‘Women & Humor’. Angela Yee popularly known as a member of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club talks exclusively to Comedy Hype. The Brooklyn, NY native opens up about the importance of laughter while dating, funniest guest she’s ever interviewed, respect for stand-up comedy and more.
CH: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF, LIKE WHAT WOULD PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOU?
AY: My friends would say that I’m a very even-keeled, practical person. I’m the one who people come to for advice or to vent, and I’ve also been told that I have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
CH: HAVE YOU EVER MET OR DATED ANYONE YOU’VE MET ON SOCIAL MEDIA. AND IF SO WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THEM?
AY: I’ve never dated anyone I met on social media. There have been times when I’ve met people in person and they told me they follow me on Twitter or Instagram, and back in the Myspace days there were times I would connect with people on there and then later meet them in person. It was never a situation where we contacted each other and arranged to meet up, it was more of a situation where we exchanged messages and then happened to be in the same place down the line. I feel like I meet so many people every day that meeting people online would be overload.
CH: WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST INTERVIEW YOU’VE DONE?
AY: Usually the funniest interviews are not funny on purpose. I think Webbie made us laugh the hardest, because of his personality. He wasn’t even trying to make us laugh; he’s just a funny guy.
CH: IN A GUY IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING FUNNY AND SILLY?
AY:Absolutely. Some guys are silly, which is the equivalent to goofy, and that can get annoying at times. It might even come across as immature if you’re not in the mood for it. That’s short term because it gets old. Being funny is more attractive, it’s smarter. I like to laugh so hard I cry.
CH: YOU’VE INTERVIEWED A LOT OF PEOPLE IN YOUR CAREER HAVE YOU TAKEN ANY OF THEM SERIOUS WHEN THEY HIT ON YOU?
AY: I normally don’t take it seriously because I feel like these guys hit on everyone. And sometimes its also just part of the interview that makes it more entertaining. I can sum it up with one particular incident when a guest told me he was going to call me every day until I went out with him. He kept it up for 2 days and then he stopped. When I saw him again, I reminded him and he said it was just too much work. Most of these entertainers and guests have a lot going on, and I do require at least a little bit of effort.
CH: PEOPLE SAY CHARLAMAGNE SHOULD GIVE STAND UP A SHOT. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
AY: I respect stand-up comics because what they do is not easy. I’ve heard people say, “I make my friends laugh all the time so I think I should try comedy.” It really is something you have to perfect and go hard for. Charlamagne could do it but it would be even harder for him than the average person because people love to criticize anyone in the public eye. But he has enough true stories that he could do it.
CH: WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU IN A RELATIONSHIP?
AY: I feel bad telling this story, but someone I was dating proposed to me and it was completely unexpected. We got to the restaurant and there were rose petals on the table, and the staff was being extremely attentive. I was like; wow they are so great in here! After dinner, they brought out dessert and there was a ring in the middle of the cake. I was confused, and I said “who put that ring in the cake?” Then I saw the cake said something but it wasn’t easy to read. I saw the word “marry,” and I was like “are you proposing to me?” He was so upset and the manager came over all excited and asked how it went. It was just bad. If you plan to propose to someone give them a heads up.
CH: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
AY: I’m inspired by anyone who is successful and passionate about what they do. My friends inspire me more than anyone else. My best friend bought a house and that inspired me to set that goal and accomplish it for myself. I see people who are entrepreneurs and I knew them when they first started their business, and that inspires me to go harder. Or I read books that people I know have written and it inspires me to work on mine.
CH: ON YOUR LIP SERVICE SHOW YOU’RE PRETTY OPEN ABOUT SEX. WHEN DATING OR IN A RELATIONSHIP HOW VOCAL ARE YOU ABOUT YOUR SEXUAL NEEDS?
AY: I try to make sure I express myself at the right time and in an encouraging way. I’ll say what I do like and focus on that, and I like sex to be fun. It’s not the best idea to criticize someone in the act, but you can bring up what they’re doing wrong during a regular conversation. And you should always ask your partner about things they want to try and what they like the best. The only thing I don’t want to do is anal. Anything in my butt is just uncomfortable to me. And if it hurts, I’ll scream owww! Guys don’t like teeth down there and neither do we.
CH: EVERYONE HAS THAT ONE THAT GOT AWAY. EXPLAIN YOURS AND WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE CHANGED?
AY: I don’t have any regrets. To be honest, I don’t miss any of my old relationships. If I’m not with them anymore there’s a reason why. I can be friends with all my exes because I don’t want them. If anything, sometimes I feel sorry for their current girlfriends.
CH: WHAT’S THE BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE YOU’VE GOT FROM THE OPPOSITE SEX?
AY: That men like to feel needed. I’ve always been so independent and men like for you to need their help, whether it’s advice or physical.
CH: TEXT OR PHONE CALLS? AND WHY?
AY: If you want to be friends then text. If you want to smash one day phone calls.
CH: LIL DUVAL RECENTLY OFFERED PLIES A CHANCE TO OPEN UP FOR HIM ON STAGE. WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING ABOUT PLIES TO YOU?
AY: Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Plies, I always knew he was hilarious and it’s a combination of his accent and his stories. Where does he find these women? And people can relate to what he’s saying, about waist trainers and weaves. It’s something that you can laugh at if you get it. I always knew he had a great sense of humor so its nice that everyone else knows now too.
CH: HOW IMPORTANT IS A SENSE OF HUMOR WHEN IT COMES TO DATING OR IN A RELATIONSHIP?
AY: It’s one of my top 3 necessities. I could never be with someone who doesn’t enjoy life and can’t laugh at themselves. Some of my best memories with people are the fun times.
CH: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT GUYS?
AY: It would be great if all guys like to shop and look at women’s shoes with me. I haven’t found too many guys that enjoy that. And don’t fall asleep right after sex. Stay up with me!
CH: FUNNIEST PICK UP LINE YOU EVER HEARD?
AY: It’s always the cheesy ones, like “did it hurt?” “did what hurt?” “When you fell from the sky angel.” I like it though.
CH: WHAT’S NEXT? WHAT CAN WE LOOK OUT FOR FROM YOU?
AY: I’ve been lining up some fashion collaborations, and I’ve been working on my first book. I’ve also started my Lip Service podcast and revamped my website, www.TeamYee.TV and I want to focus more on my ‘Ask Yee’ advice with that.
