Comedy Commandments: “Thou Shalt Not Remix Another Comedian’s Joke”

Every sports, music, and entertainment platform has their rules and guidelines that participating individuals must follow. So what are the rules for comedy? We present The Comedy Commandments along with Chicago’s Dave Helem to elaborate each one.

“Thou Shalt Not Remix Another Comedian’s Joke” – #235

“Imitation is the highest form of flattery” does not apply to comedy, in my opinion. Comics tend to look down at the joke thief. That’s not anything new. There’s a person just as bad as that joke thief, if not worse. It is the person who will take the funny in what you said, and put their own spin on it, so that you don’t think they ever stole it in the first place. It’s a sick mental game because the “remix-er” really starts to think that the joke is theirs. It’s like living a lie. This may even result in an altercation at some point. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. The only advice I can offer to keep trying to write material so personal that if other comics heard someone else say it, it wouldn’t be in question that your material was being stepped on.
