No Smart Comedy Roles For Black Women According To Gabrielle Union: “They Want Us Cooning”

As she made the rounds to promote her newest season of series Being Mary Jane on BET, Chris Rock’s Top 5 co-star Gabrielle Union sat in the studio at Power 105.1. While talking with host Angie Martinez, Gabrielle explained that even though Chris Rock feels she could be another version of comedic actress Tina Fey, she feels that many of the ‘smart comedy’ roles aren’t for black women in mind.

“There’s not a lot of smart comedies where they want a black women, they want us shucking, jiving, and cooning” Gab told her. “To get a role like Tina Fey – smart, edgy, more cerebral humor – no. They’re going to get Tina Fey. They’re going to get Amy Poehler, they’re going to get Rashida Jones, that crew. I’ve just gotta get myself invited to Judd Apatow’s house!”

Later she went on to speak on the awkwardness surrounding her make out scenes with Rock.
