Issa Rae is waking up to some interesting news this morning as she is currently trending on Twitter. It appears that an excerpt from her book in 2015, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, has caught many people’s attention. If you know one thing about Issa, her brand has found itself at the center of black millennials and the ‘woke’ crowd but some are upset that Rae would suggest black women should be with Asian men. As pointed out by The Grapevine , Rae’s book was filled with satire and the comment on Asian men and black women was apart of a popular conversation on dating.
Now, let’s get some context to the chapter. Several years ago, there were a couple of online-dating stories that noted that black women and Asian men were the least desired when it came to dating websites and apps. Jokes were made about the scenario, and a plethora of black women and Asian men dating groups popped up. I mean, why not date each other?
Rae has yet to comment on the matter. Check out the exact chapter below, provided by a user on Twitter.
On Issa Rae.
Because context matters. And because I read her book. And because I taught her book.
The first pic is the intro to the book, which I’ll come back to. 2-4 are the whole section that’s been shared. pic.twitter.com/jffPNI5L1W
