Netflix has a lot of love for comedy. This week it was announced that the streaming network will kick off a series of 15-minute comedy specials. The specials will be apart of a currently untitled stand-up series set to start filming next month. From the looks of this approach, they hope to introduce a wave of new talent with these mini- comedy specials and sccording to Vulture, this is a reflection of Netflix’s continued investment into stand-up comedy. More jokes on the way.

Netflix’s yet-to-be-titled stand-up series will tape next month at Atlanta’s historic Terminal West; the 15-minute specials will be released in bundles throughout the year. The initial lineup is as follows: Aisling Bea, Michelle Buteau, Tim Dillon, JR De Guzman, Sabrina Jalees, Janelle James, Sam Jay, Josh Johnson, Ian Karmel, Jak Knight, Matteo Lane, Max Silvestri, Taylor Tomlinson, Phil Wang, Emma Willmann, and Kate Willett. Though all up-and-comers, most are well-established comics, many of whom are touring nationally as headliners, doing sets closer to an hour. Heck, four of them — Michelle Buteau, Sam Jay, Tim Dillon, and Josh Johnson — have already taped Comedy Central half hours.

Marlon Wayans Set To Film His First Ever Comedy Special, Coming To Netflix

Marlon Wayans is ready to add to the catalogue of comedy specials. Several times when we’ve caught up with the stand-up comedian, he’s shared his discovered love for stand-up while originally preparing for the Richard Pryor biopic. Since then, Marlon has been traveling the country with material and is finally ready to give audiences an hour of fresh material. It was announced today that Marlon will premiere his first ever comedy special over at Netflix. The special will tape in the coming months.

Marlon Wayans is the latest comedian to book a Netflix stand-up special. The actor, who stars in his own NBC comedy Marlon, will tape the program this fall in Washington, D.C. The special will be produced by Wayans, Rick Alvarez, Steve Harris and 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg. Wayans already had a relationship with the streamer, as he starred in and wrote the Netflix film Naked, which was released in August.

After the news broke, Wayans took to his Instagram with this message, “We coming!!! Spent a lifetime working on being funny. Bred from a hardworking daddy, an extremely loving and creative mother, molded by giants, taught by legends… time for this little birdy to test his wings…. Let’s get this great!” With this newest hour we expect his material to touch on his upbringing, fatherhood, fame and more.

It’s Here!, Dave Chappelle Set To Return With Two New Specials On March 21st

Netflix is on top of the world right now when it comes to stand-up comedy content. The streaming service recently shared that two Dave Chappelle comedy specials are set to premiere on March 21st. Today a teaser dropped in which you can hear some of Chappelle’s jokes from his specials. This is an exciting time as it follows up with previous rumors of him filming specials in the last couple years. What a time for comedy.

The specials are from Chappelle’s personal vault: Dave Chappelle: The Age of Spin, was filmed at The Palladium in Los Angeles in March 2016, and Dave Chappelle: Deep in the Heart of Texas, was filmed at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater in Austin, TX in April 2015. Both specials will premiere on the same night — Tuesday, March 21, exclusively on Netflix. Within each of the two hour-long specials, self-financed by Chappelle and directed by Stan Lathan, the Emmy®-nominated comedian brings his unflinching comedic style, tackling race, class, politics, pop culture, and more. Chappelle is currently on the road doing concert dates in preparation for a third Netflix special.

Netflix is not playing when it comes to their comedy content. Just over a month ago we found out that Chris Rock will be brining two new specials to the streaming network, and now we are finding out Dave Chappelle will be bringing 3 new specials to Netflix. A while back Comedy Hype revealed that Chappelle had already filmed two specials which one was expected to HBO. Now we see that Chappelle is joining  full venture with Netflix.

Need more reasons for it to be 2017? Netflix announced Monday that it would be releasing three new comedy specials from Dave Chappelle — his first concert specials in 12 years. “Dave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy — searing, vital, and now more than ever, essential,” said Netflix’s VP of Original Documentary and Comedy, Lisa Nishimura, in a statement. “Dave’s three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy, and we are honored he will mark his global return on Netflix.”The first special will be an original produced by Chappelle and director Stan Lathan, while Netflix reports that two more never-before-seen episodes will come directly from Chappelle’s “personal comedy vault.”

Lil Rel’s RELevent Comedy Special Ranked As 2015 Best Comedy Specials

comedian lil rel

As a way to round-up 2015, Vulture magazine put a spotlight on a special group of comedy specials. Amongst the 10 featured specials, Chicago’s Lil Rel found himself as having one of the top ranked comedy specials. For his RELevent special produced by Kevin Hart which premiered this September on Comedy Central; Rel took the 9th spot according to Vulture.

RELevent was presented by Kevin Hart. Though I’m not sure what that actually entails, Hart’s influence is apparent in Rel, particularly in his willingness to be vulnerable. The best example of this is his bit about how “your boys don’t know what to do with you when you’re a wreck.” What sets Rel apart is how rich of a picture he paints of Chicago, his hometown and the location where the special was filmed. It’s something that was important to him.

Check out the full list of comedy specials, ranked by Vulture. Next year seems to be lining up well for Rel as he awaits to begin a new season of The Carmichael Show, and sets to begin an upcoming role.
